Carol Jean Christensen (Flory), 79, of Plains, passed away in the arms of her children on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 at Clark Fork Valley Long Term Care after her battle with cancer.

4-H is planning for another big year at the Sanders County Fair

This year promises to be another grand year for the local 4-H groups of Sanders county.

4-H hosts annual livestock auction

Seven Mineral County 4-H Members brought their livestock to the Mineral County Fair Saturday for the club’s annual livestock auction. Each one had worked hard to raise their animal.

2009 Fall Mack Days hits the fourth week

A total of 2,147 lake trout were entered in the fourth weekend of 2009 Fall Mack Days bringing the final number of the four weekends to 7,332.  Friday the weather was just right for the anglers with 1,017 entries coming  in.  Saturday brought more of the relentless windy weather the anglers have endured this fall and hardy anglers scurried to find bays or areas of the lake that were sheltered. It is not unusual for these anglers to put in 10-12 hour days.  Rough water makes  for really long days for the fishermen and ladies-they are amazing!! Saturday’s total entries were 327.  Sunday was much calmer and total entries were 803. Numbers will change quickly the next few weeks with the lake trout spawning and coming in closer. Fishing  tactics will change and areas where the fish are will change. Anglers will use their 12 best days out of 20 available for their average.  The last day is a separate day with special prizes- heaviest entry under 30”-and drawings from $300-$50. . 

Retired fire truck finds new home

It can be hard to determine the value of a used fire truck. With their use being much more than a normal vehicle, fire trucks typically can lose half of their monetary value within the first five to seven years of use according to an article found on Fire Trucks Plus Web site. However, it might be even harder to determine the value of one "retired" fire truck from the fleet of Superior's volunteer fire department.

Savage Heat opt out of co-op

For the first time since 2001, the Hot Springs Savage Heat will field their own football team, as the Hot Springs School Board voted to end the cooperative agreement with Plains last night at their monthly meeting.

Unacceptable, absurd and ridiculous

Residents of Sanders County and members of the VFW Plains Post 3596 gathered at various sites in Plains and Thompson Falls on Sunday and Monday to honor those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms and rights of United States citizens as part of their Memorial Day services.

Montana Shakespeare in the Parks brought the Superior audience back to Venice and Belmont in the mid-1950s. The traveling actors performed Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice”.

It's always a shame when a proud pet owner has to leave their furry friend behind for a day of shopping at the market. However, in Thompson Falls, leaving behind pets is unnecessary as they are more than welcome at the Thompson Falls market every Saturday throughout the summer.

Scientist tests Thompson water

Along the banks of the Thompson Falls Resevoir Thursday, University of Montana Geomorphologist Johnnie Moore bent down to take several sediment samples from the property of Thompson Falls resident, Jon Sonju. Moore was searching for contaminants that washed downstream from the Milltown Dam, breached last March. Sonju, a geologist, invited Moore to test the sediment after he noticed a green discoloration of the water near his home at the edge of the river. Moore has conducted previous research in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey and PPL Montana, which owns the Thompson Falls hydroelectric dam on the Clark Fork River.

Eighth-grader takes Paradise Spelling Bee

Eighth-grader Sarah Necessary correctly spelled "deduce" to win the Paradise School Spelling Bee Friday in the school gym. Angel Crawford of the seventh grade took second with Shailyne Ames and Shaira Caldwell of the fifth grade taking third and fourth, respectively. The four girls will represent Paradise in the Sanders County Spelling Bee in Thompson Falls March 3.

Energy issues we face are a matter of national security. Our country faces one of the biggest challenges our nation has seen since World War II. As we send $700 billion dollars overseas per year to buy oil from people who don’t like us, our “do nothing” democratic congress stopped our ability to drill within 50 miles of our coastlines, which holds the majority of our oil and natural gas. We have to come to grips with our dire need to develop our natural resources in a responsible way. Nationally we have enough resources in a responsible way. Nationally we have enough resource to meet our demand. With gas prices pushing $3.50 to $4.00 a gallon the Democratic majority leader in Congress wants us to make sure our tires are inflated at the proper pressure so we can save fuel. Ronan Dealership donates two cars to Hot Springs police department

The Hot Springs Police Department acquired two police cars Aug. 11, through a donation by Ronan Dodge in Ronan. When asked how he got the cars, Hot Springs Fire Chief and Mayor laughed.

Alberton starts four-day week

Alberton schools may have been the first Mineral County Schools to get started this year with classes beginning Monday morning, but they will be taking Friday off this week, and every week for the whole year.
