Most Sanders County schools received a passing grade from the No Child Left Behind school results which were released last Friday. Superior Fire Chief Rob Torrey resigns
Superior Volunteer Fire Department Chief Rob Torrey has quit the department effective Dec. 31, 2017. Torrey took the helm from retiring fire chief John Woodland in January 2016. Torrey has worked in the fire service field for more than 30 years and took the part-time position in order to spend more time with his wife and grandchildren.

Plains High School students played a Jeopardy-style game around the facts they were given about smoking and e-cigarettes during their English class last Friday as part of Kick Butts Day.

Prescription drug abuse on the rise
Prescription drug overdose deaths are on the rise across the country, including in Montana, which ranks third in the nation for teen abuse of prescription pain relievers. Between 2011 and 2013, prescription drug overdoses were responsible for at least 369 deaths and more than 7,200 hospital inpatient admissions and emergency department cases, according to the Montana Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Epidemiology and Scientific Support.

MDEQ talks Superfund
The head of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and several other representatives from the organization met with the Mineral County Commissioners and other interested parties at the commissioner’s meeting room in Superior Wednesday to discuss concerns about listing the Flat Creek Mine area as a Superfund site.

Cancer survivor dinner takes place of traditional Relay for Life
Despite a lower turnout from community members and less funds raised, the Cancer Survivor Celebration was a success, said event organizer Peggy Temple. The celebration was held on Thursday, Aug. 17 where around 30 cancer survivors turned out for a dinner and fundraiser held at Superior High School.
Library board meets
On Thursday, Feb. 16 the Plains Public Library held its monthly board meeting at the library at 7 p.m. Board members present for the meeting included Chairman Andrew Gonzalez, Vice Chairman Lisa Fried de Reyes, Don Stamm, Judy Hawley and Library Director Carrie Terrell.
