Smokejumpers train for upcoming fire season
Members of a unique fraternity gathered on Wednesday in Missoula at the headquarters of the smokejumpers to practice their habit of jumping out of airplanes into wildfires. Some smokejumpers, including Dan Helterline of Plains, were not in Missoula having been deployed to a fire in Virginia.

PLAINS/THOMPSON FALLS – Officials on the Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District have announced that they will initiate the 2013 spring burning program when the prescribed burning conditions are met in the coming weeks, and would like to inform the public as to where these burns will occur.

Hundreds of brightly colored quilts decorated the halls and rooms of Superior High School during the Mineral County Fair on Aug. 3 and 4. This was the Cabin Fever Quilters 18th Annual Show, with the theme “Outdoors Montana.”

Forest Service to perform burns
The Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District has several prescribed burns planned for the next few months on U.S. Forest Service lands in Sanders County. Depending on whether burning prescription conditions are met, these burns could occur over the next several weeks.

For about a couple weeks, a blue tarp was covering a sign that had been placed in the lawn of the building that houses the Superior Library, Mineral County Museum, Helpline, Mineral County Extension Office, Weed District and Conservation District.

Parents as Teachers is holding a diaper drive from Oct. 29 to Nov. 9 to collect a goal of 300 packages of diapers for distribution to families in need in Mineral County. Parents as Teachers provides educational materials to parents about child development; screens children for potential delays; and offers general parenting support. Diapers will be distributed on the evening of Nov. 14 in St. Regis along with an educational event.
