Alberton School summer camp instructor, Josh Reese, rescued a stringer of fish from the middle of Frenchtown Pond when an osprey snatched it from the shore while trying to get a free meal.

Relay for Life
At 5 p.m. on Friday, June 24 at the Superior High School track, some of Mineral County’s most loved citizens were in the limelight. This was when the 2016 Mineral County Relay for Life commenced with a celebratory reception for Mineral County cancer survivors.

A bighorn sheep was caught wandering through the neighborhood on the east end of Alberton last week.
Home damaged by fire in Superior
There was a house fire early Sunday morning in Superior, on Robins Nest Lane, off of Diamond Match Road. The home was heavily damaged. According to Superior Fire Chief, Rob Torrey, the homeowner was able to escape unharmed because of a working fire alarm.

Hospital spearheads active living programs
Walking, running, dancing, anything that gets a person moving, is a good thing. Whether it’s moderate or vigorous exercise, people need to stay active in order to stay healthy. The Mineral Community Hospital Wellness Committee has set up programs to help area residents become a little healthier. They’ve set up a six-week program with participants walking 150 minutes per week.
Commissioners address new business impacts
The Mineral County Commissioners approved a contract for Durango’s restaurant in Superior to continue to feed inmates. Restaurant owner, Jolie Skelton, said they have had the contract for the past nine years.

Monday was the summer solstice which marks the first day of summer and it is the longest day of the year. It only seems fitting that it was also the day that Hayden Bean got the longest fish he’s ever caught.

Community Notes
Fourth of July celebrations will take place in Alberton, and St. Regis. In St. Regis there will be breakfast at the school from 8 to 11 a.m. and a parade at 11 a.m. Food and games at the park from noon to 4 pm, and fireworks at dusk.

Redd Bull project area needs public comment
The Forest Service is hosting a field trip to the Redd Bull project area on Tuesday, June 28. The project area is located south and west of St. Regis in the Dry, Little Joe, Twomile and Ward Creek areas. The purpose of the trip is to share information and discuss management options for this popular recreational area.
Possible reductions in county work force
On Friday, June 17, Mineral County Commissioners passed a motion to have a reduction in the county work force in order to help balance the county budget.
Superior principal leaves school for last time
Allan Labbe retired as principal of Superior High School at the end of this year. He loads a table made by his first football team into his truck. They won the state championship that year, 44-12.

'Tis the season for graduation
Six seniors graduated from St. Regis High School on June 1. This small class included Salutatorian Steven Lowry and Valedictorian Shelby Melin, who were joined by Cody Blank, Elias King, Jeanna Bailey and Pilar Field.
Tears, turmoil as Mineral County employees strike
Mineral County sheriff department employees went on strike on Memorial Day after negotiatons broke down in May. Workers have been without a contract since July, 2015
Richard Allen Gray
Richard Allen Gray passed away May 23 at St. Patrick Hospital. He was 68 years old.
Ellen "Hope" Brown
Ellen Hope Brown passed away on May 24, 2016 at the Long Term Care facility in Plains, Montana with her family by her side. Hope was born in Monticello, New York on May 2, 1932, married Alfred Brown on May 25, 1952 and died just one day short of their 64th wedding anniversary. Hope spent her life taking care of people. She spent her early married life as a foster mother to countless children, adopting two of those children into her family. She is well remembered as the cook for the senior meals program in Walton, New York and Kilmarnock, Virginia. Hope and Alfred raised their four children in the beautiful Delaware Valley in upstate New York, where they made their home for over 40 years. They moved to the Northern Neck of Virginia in 1997, fulfilling their lifelong dream of living in Virginia. The Browns moved to Plains, Montana in 2003. Hope spent her final years taking care of her family that she loved so much, her husband Alfred, her older sister, Hilda and sons Daniel and Stewart Michael (Little Mike).
