Kids learn fire safety at Plains Fire Department

If you squint hard and maybe stick your tongue out of the side of your mouth it makes it easier to hold on to the high pressure fire hose and direct its powerful spray of water toward the simulated flames of the target.

Sanders County Sheriffs patrol region

SANDERS COUNTY- I would imagine that most law enforcement officers have experienced the feeling at one point in their career that they are in a “thankless” profession. Many people probably do not appreciate what these men and women go through on a daily basis. Until they need their help. But for some such as Sanders County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Josephson, it is just part of the job.

Food for thought: How to develop your personal negotiation skills

Negotiating skills can help you manage different kinds of life situations, both at work and in your personal relationships.  Many family situations require negotiating with others.  Deciding which movie to see, planning how to spend money, choosing a vacation spot, and many other decisions work best when you have these skills.  Being a good negotiator enables you to get what you want more often without resorting to becoming aggressive or pushy.  Negotiating with others is more effective than simply demanding what you want or just caving in.   These skills enable you to stand up for yourself and get what you want more often without harming relationships with bosses and coworkers.  Negotiating a fair solution makes you feel good about yourself and increases people’s respect for you.

Let chips fall where they may

A New Year is about to come upon us. What will 2008 have for us as a nation? Will we be a positive world influence by turning back to the precepts that made our land an example of what a God-driven democracy can do for its own people? 2008 is an election year and candidates in a myriad of national, state and local offices will be doing their best to win your support and vote. Upon what are you going to base your backing of an individual? Perhaps you are truly dedicated to a political party and you'll take the easy way out and vote a straight ticket. Maybe you will consider the individual and where they stand on the issues of the day, be it economic, the war on terrorism, illegal immigration, personal morality or where they stand on the social issues that are such a perplexing dilemma in the minds of many.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Is anger worth the hangover?

Whether your anger is justified or not, anger can be very harmful unless you can appropriately express it and let it go.  Letting go of anger is not an easy task.  Although  anger may give you power and make you feel like it is something important to hold on to, it is no life jacket.  In fact, anger and stress can hurt your physical and mental health.  High levels of hostility are responsible for heart disease and increased blood pressure.  It can lower your immune system and leave you open to an array of diseases and health problems.  It drains energy from your life and doesn’t make you feel well.
