Detention Center expected to reopen by mid-February

Several people who attended the Mineral County Commissioner meeting on Friday, Jan. 26 had the opportunity to tour the newly remodeled jail cells in the Detention Center. County Commissioners, Roman Zylawy, Duane Simons, and Laurie Johnston, along with County Attorney, Ellen Donohue; videographer, Mary Furlong; and Administrative Assistant, Kasey Feasel were able to see the newly painted cells and refurbished floor as well as the dispatch center.

District ranger provides update

Superior District Ranger Carole Johnson met with Mineral County Commissioners on Jan. 19 with an update of current projects her department has been working on. The update included information about salvage projects in the area, the upcoming large mushroom harvest as a result of the fires, and personnel issues facing the department.

Miss Montana 2017, Maddie Murray paid a visit to Alberton and Superior Schools last week to spread her message, “Gift Your Gift of Service”. Maddie was crowned on June 17, 2017 and represented Montana in the 97th Miss America Competition on ABC in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 10th. She performed “God Help the Outcasts” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Alberton Library fundraiser gives a 'passport' for fun

The Alberton Library tried something a little different as a fundraiser this year. It was called “Armchair Traveler Passport” and offered participants the opportunity to raise a glass of wine with their neighbors and friends. On Sat. Jan. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. over 50 people crowded into the Alberton Community Center and tasted wine paired with different nuts, cheese and various other hors d’oeuvres.

County students make college honor rolls

Three Mineral County students rocked the honor roll list for the Montana State University 2017 fall semester. Students must complete a minimum of 12 degree-eligible credit hours to be on either the president’s list, which is a 4.0 GPA, or the dean’s list with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Roni Phillips takes helm as new jail administrator

Roni Phillips has been hired as the new Mineral County Jail Administrator. A position created by a special jail committee after the county’s Detention Center closed on Dec. 3, 2017 due to a shortage of detention officers. Several steps have been taken to get the jail reopened, including the hiring of Phillips for this new position.

Over $3 million in Superior school bonds sold out

Over $3 million in Bonds were issued on January 10, 2018 for a Superior K-12 School improvement project and were scooped up almost immediately by investors reported D.A. Davidson Senior Vice President, Public Finance Baker, Bridget Ekstrom, who handled the sale. The estimates on the interest costs also came in lower than expected which will be a savings to taxpayers.

Winter months can feel long and boring, which is why a group of local citizens decided to bring back Community Pot Luck dinners in January, February and March. The first pot luck was held on Jan. 10 at the 4-H Building at the Mineral County Fair Grounds in Superior.

The Feb. 10 Community Pot Luck will feature Josh Stroot of the Forest Service, who will speak about the local fires of last summer and precautions for the spring runoff. Dinners will be held at the 4-H Building at the Mineral County Fair Grounds at 6:00 pm. Coffee and lemonade will be provided along with the plates, napkins and utensils so we ask those who participate to bring an entrée, dessert or salad to share. For more information, call 822-3545. In St. Regis the Tigers faced the Noxon Red Devils with a set of loses. The girls lost in a close game, 34-29. The Tigers held the lead at the half, 15-13. But the Red Devils bounced back in the third quarter putting in an extra bucket with the teams tied at 23-23. In the fourth quarter the Tigers dropped back and Noxon gained another 11 points to 6 for the win.

St. Regis football looking to play with Mullan, Idaho

St. Regis football players may be changing their colors next year from green and gold to purple and white as the school looks to co-op with Mullan, Idaho. Over the past several years the St. Regis football program has had a difficult time filling their roster. Last year the team had to cancel the season with only a handful of players available to make up a team.

Students at Superior Elementary School dug out their snow boot and sleds for a fun day enjoying the snow. It was all part of the Quarter Celebration where students who receive less than two referrals per quarter get to participate in the fun.
