Norma's display lights up Superior's holiday season
What started with two collectable Salvation Army dolls has grown into a collection with countless dolls, thousands of lights and an impressive holiday display. Friends claim the display is the best in the county. Norma Stephens said she loves Christmas and enjoys decorating for the holiday and those dolls were a gift from her husband, Mike.

Public Works Supervisor Roger Wasley won't miss 'late night calls'
A cake that read “Happy Retirement Roger - after 25 years you’re ‘off the clock’ for good. Now there’s time for everything” was eagerly accepted by Roger Wasley last Thursday. Wasley is retiring as the town of Superior’s Public Works Supervisor, and a party was held in his honor.

Mineral County Airport wins $216,000 in funding
On June 12, U.S. Sen. Steve Daines announced $738,430.00 in critical funding for five Montana airports in Terry, Baker, Superior, Ekalaka and Circle.

Stapleton visits Mineral County, talks business
Montana Secretary, Cory Stapleton, spent a few days in Mineral County last week as part of his “Things that Matter” tour. Along with a few members from his office, Stapleton has set a goal of visiting all 56 Montana counties during his four-year term.

Veterans frustrated with Choices Program
The frustration in the room was palpable as Mineral County veterans expressed their concerns about the Veteran’s Choice Program, implemented in 2015. Representatives from Senator Jon Tester’s office were in Superior Friday to listen to what local vets had to say about the program. The vets, along with medical administrators, told stories of long wait times to get in contact with people to schedule appointments; their inability to get medical appointments scheduled and of bills not paid.

Golf, track and tennis action gets underway
There was lots of sports action in Mineral County last week as golf, tennis, track and field got underway for high school athletes. Two tennis matches were played in Superior against Ronan and Granite, score were unavailable.
Officer-involved shooting in Superior
SUPERIOR – The carnival atmosphere of the 2015 Mineral County Fair and Rodeo was shattered by the sounds of gunfire Friday night after a Mineral County Sheriff’s deputy opened fire and killed a suspect directly across the street from the rodeo arena.

Week long event in Haugan educates students about the outdoors
HAUGAN – Students from the Superior Elementary School descended upon the historic Savenac Nursery in Haugan last week to learn skills they will easily put to use in the many outdoor recreational opportunities Mineral County has to offer.

Elevate Coalition brings together youth
On Sunday, April 12th, Elevate students from all corners of Mineral and Sanders counties met in Plains to talk about the role they play in reducing the underage use of drugs and alcohol in rural Montana. Student leaders participated in collaborative efforts to identify social norms and root causes in their communities. These students also made new and meaningful relationships with each other. Noxon, Superior, St. Regis, Alberton, Thompson Falls, and Plains were all schools present with at least one representative. Everyone shared creative and practical ideas, as well as personal stories about why they decided to join the Elevate Coalition. Another activity practiced was designing speeches to empower their peers to join the cause and jump “into the trenches and be on the front lines” as Superior student, Taryn Ververis said. Most of these leaders said that they find enjoyment and have fun being a positive influence and making change in their hometowns. Noxon student, Asiah Jensen, told coalition members, “to be a positive voice.”

SUPERIOR – A misunderstanding over a decision made by Mineral County Commissioners regarding the presence of dogs in the emergency services dispatch center in Superior set off a debate at the commissioner’s meeting Friday, Aug. 29.

SUPERIOR – The outreach staff of Mineral Regional Health Center held a health fair Saturday, February 1, to encourage the community to seek out health coverage.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Bob" E. Ruthford
Lieutenant Colonel Robert “Bob” E. Ruthford, 88, died of natural causes on Thursday March 28, 2013 in Superior, MT. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, friends and wife of 63 years, Doris Ruthford (Mencel). Lt. Col. Ruthford was born on March 28, 1925 to the late Scaffy and Arba Ruthford in Chicago, IL, where as a young boy he was drawn to airplanes, always taking time to watch as they flew overhead. As he grew older, his passion for aviation led Lt. Col. Ruthford to enroll in the Army Air Corp. Academy in Tampa Bay, FL at the young age of 17. Upon completion of flight school in 1944, Lt. Col. Ruthford was held in high regard for his accomplishments, graduating in the top of his class and commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the US Army Air Force. By the age of 19, he proudly served his country on his first assignment as crew commander and pilot of the B-17, and to follow in the Korean War piloted the P-51 Mustang. Lt. Col Ruthford honored his duty in the Air Force for 29 years, serving in WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Donald F “Doc” Bauer, 80, of Huson, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at his home in the arms of his loving wife and other family members after a long battle with lung cancer.
