Power surge causes three fires under power poles
Four small fires were reported over the past week, according to Josh Stroot with the Forest Service.

Reporters Notebook: Historic tour of Cedar Creek a real Montana treat
One of the items on my bucket list is to hike into as many of the lakes in Mineral County as possible. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but wasn’t sure where they were located, or how hard it would be to hike into them. When the Mineral Community Hospital offered free hikes with Jim Cyr as the guide, I jumped at the chance.
Suspect apprehended near Superior with stolen car
Jonathon Gordon Johnson was arrested on June 11, for being in possession of a stolen vehicle, driving with a suspended driver’s license, which was his ninth offense, and obstruction of a peace officer.

Lightning storm ignites Superior wildfires
A helicopter was called in to drop buckets of water onto the wildlife located near Thompson Creek, west of Superior on Wednesday, June 29.

Relay for Life
At 5 p.m. on Friday, June 24 at the Superior High School track, some of Mineral County’s most loved citizens were in the limelight. This was when the 2016 Mineral County Relay for Life commenced with a celebratory reception for Mineral County cancer survivors.

Home damaged by fire in Superior
There was a house fire early Sunday morning in Superior, on Robins Nest Lane, off of Diamond Match Road. The home was heavily damaged. According to Superior Fire Chief, Rob Torrey, the homeowner was able to escape unharmed because of a working fire alarm.

Hospital spearheads active living programs
Walking, running, dancing, anything that gets a person moving, is a good thing. Whether it’s moderate or vigorous exercise, people need to stay active in order to stay healthy. The Mineral Community Hospital Wellness Committee has set up programs to help area residents become a little healthier. They’ve set up a six-week program with participants walking 150 minutes per week.

Commissioners address new business impacts
The Mineral County Commissioners approved a contract for Durango’s restaurant in Superior to continue to feed inmates. Restaurant owner, Jolie Skelton, said they have had the contract for the past nine years.

Fourth of July celebrations will take place in Alberton, and St. Regis. In St. Regis there will be breakfast at the school from 8 to 11 a.m. and a parade at 11 a.m. Food and games at the park from noon to 4 pm, and fireworks at dusk.
Redd Bull project area needs public comment
The Forest Service is hosting a field trip to the Redd Bull project area on Tuesday, June 28. The project area is located south and west of St. Regis in the Dry, Little Joe, Twomile and Ward Creek areas. The purpose of the trip is to share information and discuss management options for this popular recreational area.

Superior principal leaves school for last time
Allan Labbe retired as principal of Superior High School at the end of this year. He loads a table made by his first football team into his truck. They won the state championship that year, 44-12.
