A small crowd gathered at the pole vaulting site during the 8B District Track Tournament at Kalispell Saturday. Most of the converging spectators were Thompson Falls athletes there to cheer on one of their own. Brian Schenavar had already secured first place at the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 3 inches. Now the senior wanted to clear 15 feet to break his own record of 14 feet, 10 inches.

An eerie orange glow crept between the summer sun and a dark plume of smoke on Quartz Loop Road late Wednesday afternoon on July 26. It left a feeling of impending doom as the column of smoke rose higher into the hazy sky. Forest Service crews cast a wary eye toward the ridge overlooking Meadow Creek Road, on the east side of the Sunrise Fire. A horse-shoe shaped fire which had been burning in the area since Sunday, July 16.

Defendant to plead guilty in crime spree

MINERAL COUNTY – The culprit of a six-year long crime spree in Mineral County that culminated in the 2014 armed robbery of the Travel Center in St. Regis was expected to plead guilty this week to multiple felony counts with a sentence recommendation of 30 years in jail with 20 of those suspended.

SUPERIOR – A defendant convicted in a string of crimes throughout Mineral County in 2013 and 2014 was sentenced last week on three felony counts to a term of 30 years with 20 years suspended, 30 years with 20 suspended on a fourth felony count, 20 years all suspended on another count, 10 years all suspended on a sixth count and 20 years all suspended on the last count.

PLAINS – Water and sewer rates were high on the list of topics during the monthly Plains Town Council meeting. A presentation from Montana Rural Water took up most of the meeting and a combined rate increase of $12 to $14 was discussed.
