County jail closes due to staff shortage

Once again the Mineral County Detention Center has been forced to close due to lack of staff. County commissioners met with Jail Administrator, Roni Phillips, Sheriff Mike Boone and County Attorney, Ellen Donohue on Friday, Jan. 18. Initially, the meeting was in regard to the detention center budget but quickly digressed to the lack of staff.

NOTICE OF SALE GOOD NEIGHBOR AUTHORITY Department of Natural Resources & Conservation Timber Sale The GNA Buick Divide Timber Sale is located within Sections 9, 10, 14, 15, & 16, of T25N - R34W; and Section 34, of T25N -R34W on the Kootenai National Forest. Approximately 22,581 tons, consisting of mixed conifer sawlogs, are offered for sale. Sealed bids will be opened at the Department of Natural Resources & Conservation, 2705 Spurgin Road, Missoula, Montana on October 10, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Bids may be hand delivered or mailed and will be accepted any time prior to the bid opening. DNRC recommends that bidders contact the Forestry Division (406-542-4300) prior to the bid opening to ensure that your bid has been received. Bids must be accompanied by a deposit of $13,435.00, representing 5% of the minimum bid value of the sale in cashier's check, certified check, bank money order or bank draft to be applied to the first sale invoice for the successful bidder. Bid bonds will be accepted and, for the successful bidder, will be closed upon execution of the Timber Sale Contract and Timber Sale Bond. The sale will be awarded to the highest responsible bidder. If the successful bidder is unable to execute the contract within 30 calendar days from the date the sale is awarded, the bid deposit will be retained by the Department as liquidated damages. Candidate: I-185 initiative deserves your support

I-185, the Healthy Montana Initiative, was submitted statewide to all Montana counties’ Clerk & Recorders Offices on Friday, June 22, 2018, with more than 42,000 signatures, and those signatures are now in the process of being verified. Since only 25,468 signatures were needed with a sufficient number from each of a minimum of 34 house districts, it is very likely that the initiative will be accepted and then placed on this fall’s ballot at the general election.

Deputy Balenger incident files released

After a nine-month paid leave that began on Oct. 3, during which $44,849.54 in public funds were used to pay for the salary of Mineral County Deputy Jim Balenger as well as insurance, taxes and other costs and Montana Department of Criminal Investigations Agent Kevin McCarvel conducted an investigation at the request of County Attorney Marcia Boris, Dept. Balenger returned to active duty.

St. Regis man to pay drug fine

Forty-nine year-old Donald Dean Glade, of St. Regis, was sentenced for two charges in district court on Monday, Nov. 8. Glade faced charges of resisting arrest and criminal production of dangerous drugs. In a plea agreement, Glade pled guilty to both counts back on Aug. 25. Glade initially pled not guilty at his initial appearance on Aug. 11 to both counts.

Discussions continued on Friday regarding the installation of a new steel statue on the Mineral County Courthouse lawn. A group of Superior citizens presented the idea to the county commissioners a few weeks ago.
