P-a-y-t-o-n wins county spelling bee, heads to state tourney in Billings

Superior sixth-grader Payton Milender won the Mineral County Spelling Bee on Wednesday, Feb. 22, after 14 rounds of competition. The spelling bee started with 30 participants, but one-by-one, they were knocked out of the running by trying to spell words like “crustaceans,” “hypotenuse” and “Huguenot.”

On Saturday, students from all over Montana traveled to Rocky Mountain College to compete in the Treasure State Spelling Bee. Superior student, Payton Milender had won the Mineral County Spelling Bee Feb. 22 and qualified for State. She was number 32 and joined 58 challengers in Billings vying for the grand prize.

The four girls will represent Paradise in the Sanders County Spelling Bee in Thompson Falls March 3.

Sanders County Spelling Bee crowns local champion

The 26th annual Sanders County Spelling Bee was held at the courthouse in Thompson Falls on Friday. Participants from Noxon, Dixon, Trout Creek, Thompson Falls, Plains, and Hot Springs competed for the privilege of representing the county at the state competition held at Montana State University in Billings in March.

“P-O-R-T-E-N-T-O-U-S-L-Y” is what Alberton eighth-grader Molia Dao spelled to become the Mineral County Spelling Bee winner. Competition was held at St. Regis School on Monday, March 4. Molia beat out 30 contestants to take home top honors. Alternates were Skylar Knapp, an Alberton fifth-grader and Trizten Avila, sixth grade, from Superior.
