The rivalry in Mineral County was a real cat fight. The Tigers, Panthers and Bobcats hated to lose to each other. It was like brothers, and now sisters, going at each other in the backyard.

Local Emergency Planning Committee gears up for emergencies
The Mineral County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) met for their monthly meeting on January 7. Tim Read, Mineral County Planner and Retired Superior Fire Chief John Woodland presented a slide show to the group regarding the freezing rain and icy roads that occurred on December 4 which resulted in closing I-90. The highway was closed for several hours, and stranded about 200 trucks in the County. The group discussed the event and came up with suggestions and strategies that would help deal with similar emergencies in the future.

Thompson Falls school board talks elections
CORRECTION - It was incorrectly stated that two board members were vacating their positions. According to Thompson Falls District Superintendent, Jerry Pauli, Elementary School Principal Maureen Simonson and Special Education Director Jennifer Cline are currently interviewing for other positions, however, the district is offering them a new contract for next year. Valley Press apologizes for the mistake or any confusion caused by the error.

SUPERIOR – Firefighters with the Superior Volunteer Fire Department could be better prepared for the next structure fire after they recently received sophisticated, new computer software that simulates fire conditions using photos of actual structures in the community.

Piranhas swim laps around the competition
CONRAD- The Piranhas of Plains continued improving their performances during the swim meet in Conrad over the weekend. The team has only one more competition before the state meet in Sidney. The divisional tournament will take place this weekend in Hamilton.

PLAINS – Local artists mingled in Plains last week as Art on the walls returned to Clark Fork Valley Hospital for its quarterly show.

Piranhas pull out wins at state meet in Sydney
SYDNEY- The Plains Swim Team spent a good deal of time this season working on the fundamentals and getting the team used to what competition feels like. The team tirelessly practiced flip turns, starts and technique during a season that only lasts a few months giving swimmers little time to adapt and learn.

'Cardiac Ready Communities' hoping to take hold in Mineral County
The Local Emergency Planning Committee held their monthly meeting on Nov. 3 in Superior. During the meeting, Janet Trethewet gave a brief presentation on “Cardiac Ready Communities” initiative. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (MDPHHS) received a $3.2 million gift from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust last year. The funds have been used to implement this three-year initiative.

Plains radio station in need of local help
Plains radio station KWHP-LP may soon have to shut its doors if it does not get help from its listeners.
