PLAINS - The Methodist Church in Plains played host to one of the leading experts in a unique art form on Friday. Alan Pate of St. Ignatius has been studying and working with ningyo or Japanese dolls for the better part of two decades.

We the People: the bigger picture

Many months ago I wrote an article about David Walker’s warnings about the fiscal direction of this country.  Mr. Walker, the former Comptroller of the United States from 1998 until 2008, has been warning politicians, the media, and the American public for over a decade that we are off course and headed for disaster. In August 2007, before the financial system meltdown of 2008, Mr. Walker declared:

We Care event a success

Folks from all over Mineral County came together to take part in the We Care Festival in Superior, which was held on Saturday, Oct. 16. The gathering took place in front of the historic school building in the heart of Superior, and featured several different exhibits, activities for kids and live music courtesy of the Zylawy brothers. The event was intended as a fundraiser for the newly created We Care organization.

Montana has by far the highest workers’ compensation rates in the country, with costs over 160% above the national median. An overhaul of the system is essential to prevent the exodus of employers who find it more cost-efficient to conduct business in nearby states.  House Republicans introduced a bill this past week that addresses our state’s burdensome workers’ comp costs and will allow employers to keep jobs in Montana.

The girls on the Alberton volleyball team are taking a stand against breast cancer this month. The month of October is breast cancer awareness month and the girls decided as a volleyball team that they would take the opportunity to raise awareness and to also raise some funds.

The election results are in and with a few surprises. Mark French from Paradise will not be moving on to the general election as Denny Rehberg and Michael McDonald will be on the ballot to compete for the congressional seat during the general election in November.

Superior Bobcats back on the football field

The Superior Bobcats were back on the field on Monday and were looking forward to a new season of high school football. Dan Lucier said about 37 kids showed for the first day of practice, which is about the same number as prior years.

Last week, the House Select Committee on Redistricting that I served on had their last meeting and took executive action on House Resolution 2. This bill will go the House Floor this week to be voted one, and then will be forwarded on to the Redistricting and Reapportionment Commission for their consideration on whether they accept the recommended changes. The Senate will send their own Resolution for changes on to the Commission for their consideration.
