More than 60 homes threatened as evacuation orders go into effect
Over 60 homes have been threatened by the Sunrise Fire burning east of Superior. Last week several areas including Sunrise Creek, Quartz Flats and Quartz Creek were given Stage 3 evacuation orders. Other areas, including Verde Creek, remained on Stage 2 evacuation warning. While the Rivulet area located northeast of the fire is on Stage 1 Evacuation Alert.

Railroad Day brings community together
The 32nd annual Railroad Day was held on July 14 and 15. Saturday kicked off with a breakfast at the Senior Center starting at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., classic cars, horses, and floats paraded down Railroad Avenue as people lined the route and kids clambered for candy thrown from the line of vehicles. Long-time Alberton resident Joe Peterson was the Grand Marshal and Mineral County rodeo royalty, Madison Hill and Jonna Warnken, lead the way while carrying the American and Montana Flags on horseback.

Forrest Kaufman, 84
Beloved husband and father, Forrest Harley Kaufman of Spokane and formerly of Plains passed away June 17, 2017 of heart failure.

Occupants escape after truck stalls on tracks
Kyle Balm, 23, knew he was in trouble when he heard a train whistle blow on July 3. His 1981 red Ford truck had stalled on the tracks near the Natural Pier Bridge outside of Alberton.

Flat Creek cleanup nears completion after 15 years
The Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Environmental Quality hosted a site tour of the Flat Creek-Iron Mountain Mine tailing cleanup on May 10. Members of the Superior Technical Assistance Committee (STAC) and the public met in Superior and drove up to the site north of town. It gave interested parties the opportunity to ask questions and present ideas or concerns to the departments involved with the cleanup.
