Grange Master talks of past
PLAINS- The Master of the Plains Grange 101, Fred Cavill, spoke last week about the historic Grange that meets the first Tuesday of every month at its location on Lynch Street between Pierce and South Walnut Street.

Arthur Thomas “Tom” Mattfeldt passed away on Sept. 26, 2015. Tom was born on July 27, 1949 in Denver, Colo. He lived in Superior, Mont. all of his adult life.
No such right: Montanan Republican party closes doors
The Montana Republican Party claims a First Amendment right to associate in a closed primary election where only registered Republican voters are allowed to cast a ballot. The Republicans can holler all they want, but if they don’t put it in writing – they have no such right. The U.S. Supreme Court said that political parties have a constitutionally protected right of political association under the First Amendment when the party states its associative rights in its rules [450 U.S. 107, 122(1981)].
Suicide rate high in state
MINERAL/SANDERS COUNTY – According to statistics provided by Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services Suicide Prevention Coordinator Karl Rosston, Montana consistently has one of the highest rates of suicide per capita in the country.

Our Congressman, Brian Zinke, is supposed to be taking care of and looking out for OUR best interests. He is NOT. He recently voted in favor of HR Bill 1599 making GMO labeling OPTIONAL {“The FDA must allow, but not require, GMO food to be labeled as GMO”} (see fourth para of this link: https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/1599).

Avista offers local scholarships
SANDERS COUNTY - Once again, a total of up to $7,500 will be granted to qualified local youth organizations this year as part of the Avista Fund. This is the fifth year that Avista will award grants from the Avista Fund to directly benefit the people who live in and around Sanders County.
Lookout restoration makes progress
THOMPSON FALLS – Work to refurbish and improve the Big Hole Lookout on the Plains-Thompson Falls Ranger District is progressing well. The lookout may be added to the Lolo National Forest’s Recreation Rental program once the work is complete. The work has been a team effort involving Passport In Time (http://www.passportintime.com) volunteers, Forest Service heritage specialists, the Northern Region Pack String (https://www.flickr.com/photos/fsnorthernregion/5641423653) and the Wild Horse Plains Backcountry Horsemen who have provided stock support each week.
