Keeping in touch: A look at worker's comp

Montana has by far the highest workers’ compensation rates in the country, with costs over 160% above the national median. An overhaul of the system is essential to prevent the exodus of employers who find it more cost-efficient to conduct business in nearby states.  House Republicans introduced a bill this past week that addresses our state’s burdensome workers’ comp costs and will allow employers to keep jobs in Montana.

Housing project boosts local economy

In today’s struggling economy, it’s not hard to imagine a string of abandoned, run down trailers creating an eye-sore for neighbors and passers by. It would be no stretch of the imagination to envision local teens getting into trouble without supervision. Maybe graffiti or vandalism, maybe worse.

The monthly Mineral County Resource Committee meeting that was held in the county commissioners conference room Jan. 4 was close to a 50-50 split with in-person and Zoom participants. It was even mentioned that so many people are "zoomed-out" and attending meetings in person is much more productive.

17 fire starts kept under control by emergency crews

The Lolo National Forest is in Very High Fire Danger, and over the past few weeks several fires have started, including a five-acre burn near Cyr last Wednesday, Aug. 1. Hot wheel bearings from a semi-truck that lost a tire started the blaze near mile marker 71 on the north side — causing both lanes of traffic on Interstate 90 to come to a halt. There was construction in the eastbound lane, and so traffic was already confined to two lanes. After approximately a half hour, emergency responders were able to get traffic going again, and it took fire crews from the Frenchtown Fire Department and the Superior and Ninemile Ranger Districts about three hours to contain the fire. No injuries were reported.

Region One wolf count discussed at Kalispell meeting

The sportsmen’s meeting held in Kalispell on Jan. 30 drew 400 plus attendees. We would like to thank the area sportsmen and women, the Foundation for Wildlife Management, Montana Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Montana Fish, Widlife & Parks for being there. It was a very passionate, concerned crowd who were frustrated with the ungulate population counts in Region One, located in Northwestern Montana.

Plains runners excede hopes

Wow, what a day!  That’s the thought that kept coming back into my mind as the Plains Cross Country teams made their way back from the Ronan Invitational cross country meet this past Saturday.  Coming into the meet, I had been careful not to get my hopes up. The training load for the team had been pretty significant during the past couple of weeks; and, many of the kids on the team had been fighting colds or minor illness. But, on a bright and sunny day, the kids more than exceeded my expectations. With five high school boys and three girls competing, personal records (PR’s) were set or equaled by six of the athletes.
