Fire danger lowered after heavy rain

MINERAL COUNTY – After days of heavy rains in Mineral County, the fire danger in the area was reduced to high on Saturday, Aug. 23, by the Forest Service and the Stage 1 fire restrictions were lifted allowing people to once again have campfires.

Mushroom buyers have been in Sanders County for about a month now as both locals and professional commercial pickers collect the morels from the vast area burned last year in the Copper King Fire. According to Dena Wiley and Robin Daems, two of the buyers out of Washington State, the Conicals are reaching the end of their season while the Greys are just coming in. At the peak of the season pickers were bringing in about 1000 pounds per day while now the take is about 200 lbs.

On Friday, January 31, Plains-Paradise Rural Fire Department responded to a fire in a privately owned field off Highway 28 between mile markers three and four. A vehicle had caught fire but the fire department stopped the flames from spreading.

Train cars derail near Cyr

During a July 6 Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting, Montana Rail Link spokesman Tony Bacino reported that four rail cars had derailed in the Cyr area a week earlier. The cargo consisted of steel, table salt, cotton seed and other non-hazardous material. The cars were the last four of the train and the cause is under investigation.

Candidates file for 2018 election races

At 5 p.m. on Monday, March 12, last minute candidates filed for this year’s elections. In Montana, voters will be wading through 292 legislative candidates running for 100 seats in the House and 25 in the Senate. Of those open seats, 20 are already decided because only one candidate filed, 11 of which are Democrat and nine Republican. Overall, 139 Democrats have filed and 142 Republicans, 20 Libertarians, four Independent, and four Green Party.

Precision rifle series puts shooters to the test

A slight breeze cut through the crisp morning air at the Butte Gun Club as the shooters toted their rifles to the firing line. One by one, the competitors took their positions. At one stage, a man stepped into an old claw-foot bathtub and rested the front of his rifle on the metal rim. To his right, another shooter contemplated how to best support his rifle on a giant rubber tire while the shooter on the stage to his left took to his stomach on a rickety-looking raised wooden platform.
