Sadly, the new Kootenai National Forest Plan deems 64% of Montana’s most productive forest off limits to timber harvest. Compared to the 1987 plan, this represents a 20% jump in acreage that cannot be harvested. Nearly 1 million acres of viable timber land on the KNF will be officially out of production due to “other” management objectives.

Christmas isn't over yet

The Christmas season is over? No, not entirely. The Eastern Orthodox, the second largest Christian communion in the world, numbering approximately 1,200,000 adherents in the United States, celebrated Christmas on Jan. 7, which is Dec. 25 in the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar, the reformed Julian Calendar we use today, was implemented by a Catholic Pope, Pope Gregory XIII, in 1582, but to this date it has not been recognized for religious observances by many Eastern Orthodox Churches around the world.

Letters to the Editor; Council lacks integrity

The water issue in our town and many and many others is a hot topic. I’m not here to debate for or against our water rates, but there is one part that is not being brought to the attention of the public. When big government puts regulation onto a business, or in our case a city ordinance, it is just a kind way to say tax. The city wants a commercial rate on the businesses, our own mayor said at a public works meeting this winter, he didn’t care if we (the city) charged a higher rate to the businesses because you can run it onto your customers anyway. Councilman Carl Reeb said and I quote, “I would rather have 50 pissed off business owners in here (city hall) then 500 pissed off residents, besides most of you don’t live in town and can’t vote for me anyway. Hahaha.”

Energy policies

In an interview with the Missoulian last week, State Representative Pat Ingraham let slip that she wants us to pay higher energy bills.  She stated that she supports further deregulation of energy companies.  The lessons of the past are clearly lost on Mrs. Ingraham — when the state legislature deregulated energy in the late 1990s, Montana went from having some of the cheapest energy to having some of the most expensive.  Further deregulation of these big companies will only result in higher prices.
