Superior soon to be a Superfund site
After months of planning and deliberation, the Superior Town Council finally decided to proceed with the process of making the town of Superior a Superfund site.

Elevate Coalition brings together youth
On Sunday, April 12th, Elevate students from all corners of Mineral and Sanders counties met in Plains to talk about the role they play in reducing the underage use of drugs and alcohol in rural Montana. Student leaders participated in collaborative efforts to identify social norms and root causes in their communities. These students also made new and meaningful relationships with each other. Noxon, Superior, St. Regis, Alberton, Thompson Falls, and Plains were all schools present with at least one representative. Everyone shared creative and practical ideas, as well as personal stories about why they decided to join the Elevate Coalition. Another activity practiced was designing speeches to empower their peers to join the cause and jump “into the trenches and be on the front lines” as Superior student, Taryn Ververis said. Most of these leaders said that they find enjoyment and have fun being a positive influence and making change in their hometowns. Noxon student, Asiah Jensen, told coalition members, “to be a positive voice.”

A case against the CSKT compact
Has it occurred to you that the CSKT Reservation has already received its federal reserved water with the construction of the Flathead Irrigation Project? Water is very plentiful because the federal reclamation project plan was to irrigate “all of the practicably irrigable acreage” estimated to be between 130,000 and 150,000 acres. This is consistent with the Hell Gate Treaty which emphasized agriculture and the federal reserved water rights which require quantification (justification) of the water which is to make the reservation productive. The other 6 tribal reservations in Montana were approved because they went through the process of identifying the purposes of the water, stating the amount, place of use, etc. The water was available and fit the purposes of the reservations. Since the CSKT Reservation has adequate water their emphasis is to control water both on and off their Reservation and lease most of the water they get from the Compact to others.
Months seek to bring awareness to skin cancer, sun safety
The most diagnosed type of cancer in the United States is also the cancer that is not only treated the most successfully, but also the type of cancer that is perhaps the most preventable. According to Terry Egan, cancer control program coordinator for region one (Missoula, Mineral and Ravalli counties) for the Montana Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (MCCCP), a supporting partner to the Montana Cancer Control Coalition (MTCCC), over one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the states this year.

Patrick Low, superintendent of St. Regis School District, sat in an empty room Saturday. A meeting was scheduled to discuss the third draft of the school's strategic plan. And while no one showed up to offer any comments on the plan, Low said that board members as well as himself have received input on the plan in passing, whether at the grocery store or at sports camps.
