Plains cross country takes on bigger schools in Polson
POLSON – The Plains High School cross country team faced some unique challenges at the Pirate Duels XC Meet in Polson last Saturday. Held at the Polson Rodeo Grounds, the course featured obstacles such as hay bales, steep hills and log jumps.

Paradise woman wins Toastmasters event
With a story about a team of cats who first won the Iditarod race, disguised as dogs, and then nearly won the Olympics ski jumping events, Mary Lou Hermes, member of Plainly Speaking Toastmasters, brought home the first place trophy to win the District tall tales contest for a second time. The contest was staged at the District 78 Toastmaster Convention in Billings April 23-24.

Dennis Ruff
Dennis Ruff, 70, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 29th. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, two daughters, Jean and Chip, and two grandchildren, Joe and Madison.Services will be held on Saturday, December 7th at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Plains, Montana. A small gathering to celebrate Dennis’ life will follow the service.

Science club reflects on Alaskan cruise
ST. REGIS – It has been nearly three weeks since the St. Regis Science Club went north to Alaska, yet the group is still talking about their adventure.

Apprenticeship program brings training and employment opportunities to Mineral County
ST. REGIS – On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Montana Department of Labor & Industry officials visited the Idaho Forest Group St. Regis Mill as 12 apprentices signed paperwork to join the company’s first Montana Registered Apprenticeship program.

Study says there are too few homes for growing population
The rub, Horowitz said, is that Montana’s population increased by 10% between 2010 and 2020, according to U.S. census data, while the number of housing units in the state grew by only 7%.

4-H members win big at Kalispell show
On September 12th five Sanders County 4-H Horse Project members began 3 days of intense competition in the Montana State 4-H Horse Show held at the Majestic Arena in Kalispell. 105 top winning 4-H riders from 23 counties from across Montana traveled to Kalispell for this highly competitive event. This is the second consecutive year the event has been held in Kalispell. Four of our county riders, Mahala Sweet, Marsada Sweet, Tanner Ovitt and Dariyan Sheehan are returning competitors from last year’s event. As a new comer, Gabriella Pallister and her horse Whisper had lots of help from the more experienced (one year under their belt) members. Stabling is provided on site. Michele McGuigan, a Sanders County 4-H horse Leader and member of the State Horse Committee, provided transportation for some of the members and horses along will helpful assistance with show preparation.

Hot Springs volleyball hopes to be contender
Despite losing one of the top players in the region due to graduation, Hot Springs High School volleyball coach Alisha Pablo is confident her group of returnees will be a strong contender during the 2020 season.
Chamber to hold forums
The Mineral County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring six “Meet the Candidates” forums for Mineral County and State House District 14 candidates during the month of October. The events will be held at the St. Regis Community Center Oct. 5 and 21; Alberton School Oct. 7 and 12; and the Superior High School Multipurpose Room Oct. 18 and 19.
