Team assesses damage from Highway 200 Complex
The 2017 wildfire season is in the books, however now is the time for some Forest Service workers to assess the damage that was done.
St. Regis school board one of two recognized statewide
The St. Regis School Board was recognized as one of two School Boards of the Year in Montana for its efforts in policies, facilities, and programs at St. Regis. School Superintendent Joe Steele, who nominated the board for the award, said he has been impressed with the school board’s vision, and those past board members who initiated their vision.

The Trinity Lutheran Church in Superior began Advent Sunday, Dec. 2. Their midweek services will occur on Thursdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20 with soup supper at 6 p.m. and worship at 7 p.m.
Montana Highway Patrol commissions 12 new troopers
HELENA – The Montana Highway Patrol commissioned 12 new troopers on Feb. 17, at the 61st Advanced Academy Graduation ceremony.

Young scientists strut their stuff
According to young scientests Kylie Lucier and Chance Bridgewater, chewing gum and listening to music makes a person smarter and helps them concentrate. These were two conclusions found at a recent St. Regis science fair. The fair involved middle and high school students who competed for bronze, silver, and gold medals. Gold medalists go on to compete at the state science fair, held at the University of Montana on March 27-28.

Plains radio station in need of local help
Plains radio station KWHP-LP may soon have to shut its doors if it does not get help from its listeners.

Softball tournament organizer Heimbigner steps down after 25 years
After 25 year, Steve Heimbigner, is hanging up his cleats and stepping down as the organizer for the annual S&S Foods and Nugget Lounge Softball Tournament held on July 20-22.

Alberton man helps restore communications after Hurricane Maria hits Puerto Rico
When Alberton resident Bryce Nordgren heard about Hurricane Maria he didn’t think he would get a front row seat to the disaster that struck Puerto Rico on September 20. But two weeks later was standing on a highway which had been pummeled by 154 mph winds.

Committee formed to get county jail reopened
Discussions continued on Friday at the Mineral County commissioners’ meeting regarding the closure of the county jail. It closed the previous Friday due to insufficient staffing. After a jailer was let go and two more quit over the past few weeks, it left only two jailers to staff the facility.

New youth magazine focuses on local health issues
Last week, Mineral County residents received a new magazine in their mailbox called YC, Youth Connections. It was filled with articles for kids like “The Secret to Successful Kids” and “The 40 Developmental Assets: Positive Identity.”

Local author's Montana book series was inspired by a dream
Mabel Ebner, 71, didn’t realize she was going to become an author late in life. But then she visited her brother near Corvallis. One day while at his cabin located in the Sapphire Mountains, she looked around at the scenery and thought, “wow, this would make a good book someday.”
City Council discusses road district, open burning permits
The Plains City Council discussed many items at the March 6 meeting, including the road district, Plains Day, and a proposed subdivision.
PBA makes 2017 plans
The Plains Business Association (PBA) met for its annual strategic planning for 2017 last week. Approximately 20 business owners met Tuesday Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss what will be kept, changed, or added this year. The board retained many of its officers from last year and is looking for one member. There were three presentations during the meeting, one by Kenton Pies, one by Karen Thorson, and the third was from John Thorson.

A Mineral County school counselor contacted Monte Turner at the Mineral Community Hospital in December and asked if they had any hygiene products they could donate to the school. The counselor explained that, though they teach hygiene to their students, it continues to be a big problem.

Montana Forest Products week was Oct. 15-21 which is an annual event started by the Montana Legislature in 2011 to honor the forest products industry and its appreciation for providing locally made wood products, stewardship of Montana’s public and private forests, and employment.
