PLAINS - Estelle M. Wiltzen was born August 22, 1927 to John Malaterre and Genevieve Ladoucer Malaterre in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota. She spent her childhood in North Dakota and met the love of her life, Harris Wiltzen in Deering, North Dakota. They were married on August 22nd, 1946 and moved to Missoula, Montana where Harris went to the University of Montana. Their 6 children were all born in Montana, and they moved from Missoula, to Circle, Scobey, Malta and finally, to Plains, where she passed away on September 9, 2015 shortly after her 88th birthday and after 69 years of marriage to Harris.

Lumber Prices at eight-year high
According to a news release, prices of lumber increased to an eight-year high, increasing the price of 22 percent from mid-November to January. The boom is accredited to the recovery of the U.S. housing market as well as rising exports to China. In Sanders County and Mineral County, there are two lumber companies: Tri-Con and Thompson River Lumber.

United Way helps residents prepare for wildfire season
It was National Wildfire Preparedness Day last Saturday, May 5 and the Frenchtown Rural Fire Department teamed up with United Way of Missoula to pilot a community chip day. Crews were in the Sorrel Springs and Elk Meadows subdivisions near Frenchtown and Huson chipping brush and debris piled on the road by homeowners. These are efforts to prepare their properties for this year’s wildland fire season.
