Red Devils unlikely journey comes to a close at state

Last year at the end of a 7-22 season, Noxon head coach Mike Tessier said next year the team would go on a major run. With only two graduating seniors, he had good reason to be optimistic. When Noxon lost their opening game of the divisional round, nobody would have predicted the type of run Mike Tessier and his team would have.

No, it is not only men who are controlling

I am addressing the response to the letter about domestic violence in a February issue of The Valley Press. Of course it is not only men who are controlling and abusive. Statistics indicate that women are the abusers in about 5 percent of all cases. Exact stats can be obtained from the local organization you refer to SCCFF, as well as NOW (National Organization for Women) to name only two. Any mental health facility can provide those statistics, as can law enforcement agencies. One could argue that because 5 percent of abusers are in fact women, both genders should be referenced when discussing the issue of domestic violence.

Burn permits extedned until end of June

Fire Managers are extending all burn permits issued from the Superior Ranger Station through Monday June 28, 2010. "Predictions of precipitation for the next couple weeks should give homeowners more time to get their spring cleaning done," says Jim Ward, AFMO. After June 28th, all burn permits will be voided and no burning will be allowed. Already, this burn season, Volunteer Fire Departments and Forest Service have responded to three burns that escaped the homeowner's control.

Taskforce urges safe driving

SANDERS COUNTY - School is out and vacations have begun! Desk chairs sit empty while co-workers enjoy their time away from the job. Kids are blazing around the house ready for non-stop entertainment. Phones are ringing off the hook and swim towels are drying on the deck. Meanwhile, at work the copier has been jammed for two days and the office plants are wilting. And you, one of the few still pulling a 9 to 5, you are left scrambling to tend to the needs of your clients, your children, as well as those of your vacationing colleagues. Productivity is suffering. Thank goodness they’ll be back on the job soon and you can take your turn, with your family, on your vacation. But what if they don’t return?

Free lunch trumps free enterprise in America

I suppose I shouldn’t be any more surprised than most taxpaying Americans to discover that I paid more in income taxes in 2018 than the behemoth retailer Amazon.com; but then I didn’t have a net profit of $11.2 billion, either. Nor did I get anything close to Amazon’s $128 million tax refund for 2018. This is the second consecutive year that Amazon has not paid federal income taxes. In 2017, it paid no taxes on an income of $5.6 billion. All this from the April 11, 2019 “Fortune” magazine which reported on research done by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP).

Food for thought: stress and aging

Scientists have identified the first direct link between stress and aging, a finding that could explain why intense, long term emotional strain can make people sick and grow old before their time.  The research demonstrates the mind can not be separated from the body.  Stress impacts health by modulating the rate of cellular aging.  In other words, stress damage to DNA is the culprit behind premature wrinkles, gray hair and diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular, insulin resistance and autoimmune disorders.

Rafting the river

As a child, I spent most of my time in man-made swimming pools. The only recreation I remember out on a real body of water was spent in a lake (and if my memory is right, it too, was man-made). I was probably about seven or eight when we headed up to the lake one summer with my uncles and aunts. They tied a rope to an inner tube and threw it out the back of the boat and me and brother and sister took turns being pulled behind the boat, while in the tube with one of our uncles. And while it was fun at the time, it was nothing like I experienced this weekend.
