Methadone causes concern for community

On May 12th, 2014, parents and law enforcement officials gathered at the local school board meeting to express their frustrations over drug abuse in our local schools. Many of us consider drug abuse to be an activity for teenagers and young adults historically. Now we are faced with a new reality – drugs are abused by children in our community in their pre-teen years.

Community Notes

The Catholic Church in Superior will host Lenten lunches on Tuesdays until Holy Week (April 14-20). The first lunch was March 12 and then held on Tuesdays until April 9. Lunch is noon to 1 p.m. The Methodist, Assembly of God, LDS, Catholic and Community Churches will be responsible for each lunch. Donations will be accepted with proceeds supporting a local charity. Buckle Up says Mineral County teens have the power to reduce crash rates

The report from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm measured a 47 percent decline in teen driver-related fatalities over the past six years. Still, risky behaviors -- such as texting or emailing while driving, driving after drinking, and low seat belt use -- remain serious problems, and experts see specific opportunities to “apply the gas” to these common factors in crashes involving teen drivers. “When you see the needle move, as we have in this report, it’s time to apply the gas on programs that encourage safe teen passenger behaviors, as well as those that address what causes teens to crash.”
