Alberton Library fundraiser gives a 'passport' for fun
The Alberton Library tried something a little different as a fundraiser this year. It was called “Armchair Traveler Passport” and offered participants the opportunity to raise a glass of wine with their neighbors and friends. On Sat. Jan. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. over 50 people crowded into the Alberton Community Center and tasted wine paired with different nuts, cheese and various other hors d’oeuvres.

HOT SPRINGS – Athletes battled the biting wind and spitting rain to run, throw and jump their way to the top. The Hot Springs Track and Field team traveled to Ronan on Saturday, March 29 to compete in their first track meet of the season.

On Sept. 9 the St. Regis six-man football team traveled to White Sulphur Springs for their season opener, only to be defeated 56-13. White Sulphur Springs came out strong in the first quarter and put 44 points on the board. St. Regis was unable to get the ball into the end zone until the fourth. The Tigers suffered from a late start this season due to lack of participation. They were able to pull together seven players a few weeks ago. Head Coach Jesse Allan said the team has had some light practices and some in the gym last week due to hazardous air-quality conditions.

Experts give workshop to combat hoppers
Federal and state officials offered their expertise to ranchers and other residents of Sanders County about a potential grasshopper problem. Two men from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and another from the Montana Department of Agriculture gave a grasshopper workshop to just over a dozen people Friday morning in Hot Springs.

GREAT FALLS – The Hot Springs Savage Heat competed in Great Falls over the weekend at the State C Track and Field Meet, with a strong performance over the two-day event.

The birds of spring arrive at Freezeout Lake
Each spring and fall, flocks of white geese make their way to Freezeout Lake located near Fairfield, Montana. They are migrating from southern wintering grounds to nesting areas in the far north. As far as Wrangel Island, Russia. Last weekend, there were a reported 15,000 geese flying through the area, landing on any one of the six ponds and lake which cover the Freezeout Lake Wildlife Management Area. However, as many as 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans have been observed in the area at one time. They usually arrive around mid-March, and in late October of each year.
