Conor Toivonen wins county spelling bee
The word was “pueblo” and it won Superior fifth-grader Conor Toivonen a trip to Billings. He won the Mineral County Spelling Bee held in Alberton on Feb. 28. The runner-up was Liberty Gregory from Alberton.

A GoFundMe page has been created for the St. Regis Music Department to try and raise money for a vibraphone. The page reads that the department has “begun to work on their first percussion ensemble piece and we only need one more instrument to make our mallet section complete. Yamaha makes great instruments for a reasonable price and we are excited to fill out our percussion section with the cool sounds that this instrument adds. Help us out and donate to a wonderful growing music program in small-town Montana!”

Detention Center expected to reopen by mid-February
Several people who attended the Mineral County Commissioner meeting on Friday, Jan. 26 had the opportunity to tour the newly remodeled jail cells in the Detention Center. County Commissioners, Roman Zylawy, Duane Simons, and Laurie Johnston, along with County Attorney, Ellen Donohue; videographer, Mary Furlong; and Administrative Assistant, Kasey Feasel were able to see the newly painted cells and refurbished floor as well as the dispatch center.

Alberton Library fundraiser gives a 'passport' for fun
The Alberton Library tried something a little different as a fundraiser this year. It was called “Armchair Traveler Passport” and offered participants the opportunity to raise a glass of wine with their neighbors and friends. On Sat. Jan. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. over 50 people crowded into the Alberton Community Center and tasted wine paired with different nuts, cheese and various other hors d’oeuvres.

Recent news reports have had the Mineral County Health Department personnel scrambling to explain why the county showed up on a report from the Centers for Disease Control as being at high risk for HIV.
St. Regis football looking to play with Mullan, Idaho
St. Regis football players may be changing their colors next year from green and gold to purple and white as the school looks to co-op with Mullan, Idaho. Over the past several years the St. Regis football program has had a difficult time filling their roster. Last year the team had to cancel the season with only a handful of players available to make up a team.
