SUPERIOR – Several representatives from Superior Public Schools presented to the Superior Senior Center April 30 showing evidence of the decaying junior high school. The $3.99 million bond levy the school is seeking is for a new junior high school and additional upgrades to the other buildings in the district.

Competing interests, different opinions

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality held two meetings last week regarding projects dealing with Mineral County’s natural resources. One was about the Flat Creek Iron Mountain, Mine and Mill Superfund site at Superior. The other was an application for an Opencut Mining Permit on Dry Creek for gravel, submitted by Riverside Contracting.

Forest Service tries to stay on schedule despite furlough

Despite the 35 day government shutdown, the Superior and Ninemile U.S. Forest Service offices have been working hard to remain on schedule. Superior District Ranger, Carole Johnson, and new Ninemile District Ranger, Eric Tomasik, gave an update report to the Mineral County commissioners on Feb. 22.

February was Oral Health Month and Superior School nurse Barb Jasper visited the first grade class to teach about good dental habits. Each student received a brand new toothbrush and was given lessons on how to brush their teeth properly.

Superior Technical Assistance Committee environmental consultant Steve Ackerlund reported last week that he had met with Department of Environmental Quality Project Manager Joel Chavez and U.S. Forest Service representative Bob Wintergerst regarding how plans were coming for this spring regarding the Flat Creek/Iron Mountain Mine and Mill Site Superfund site located north of Superior.
