Ken Harvey Jr.

Former Plains resident Ken Harvey JR, 71 passed away unexpectedly Oct. 4th 2013 at his home in Walla Walla,WA. He was born in Blackduck, MN. to Kenneth and Dona (Palmer) Harvey. Ken spent the first nine years of his life on their Dairy farm, moving to another farm in Whitefish, MT. for six years. The family moved to Plains in 1956. Ken graduated from Plains High School in 61. During high school, he worked for Don and Betty Coe at the newspaper, The Plainsman (Valley Press) as a linotype operator, Don was a great influence on Ken and he made the newspaper his lifetime career. He joined the Navy in 1964, spending six years furthering his education in Journalism and Photography, stationed in Italy and Greece, After the military, in 1970 Ken returned to Plains for a short time, working again at the Plainsman. Leaving Plains, he worked for newspapers in Great Falls, Rapid City, SD, Scotts Bluff, Neb., Spokane and Walla Walla. WA. where he remained, working for Inland Printing for 25 years, up until his death. Ken became an avid bowler, starting at age 14, while setting pins for the VFW Club in Plains. At age 16 he had the opportunity to bowl professionally, but chose not to. Over the years he bowled three perfect 300 games and many 298 and 299, winning many awards and dozens and dozens of trophies. Years later in a house fire he lost 13 bowling balls. Ken also enjoyed fishing and camping. He was married twice, both ended in divorce. Ken is survived by one daughter Gina Vinson, Olympia,WA., longtime friend and companion Jan Sans, Walla Walla, WA., sisters Katherine Beck, Saint Ignatius, MT., Dena Harvey, Hot Springs, MT., brothers, Dick (Elaine) Point Pleasant NJ., Dave, Plains, several nieces and nephews and many cousins. Ken was proceeded in death by his parents. Services were held in Walla Walla and a memorial will be in Plains this summer.

St. Regis JV football moves from flag to tackle on gridiron

St. Regis held a sports meeting on August 8 for volleyball and football. Practice started last week and will be Monday through Saturday at 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. until the 20th. After that, there will be just evening practice. Once school starts, it will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

320 racers take to the trails west of St. Regis

Saturday was a beautiful day with mild temperatures and perfect for a run through the mountains. This is where nearly 320 racers were for the annual Trail Rail Run. The race offers 50 mile to 5K races, starting at 7 a.m. (Montana time) at Mullan, Idaho and end in St. Regis. The event is sponsored by the St. Regis Community Council and Tyler Cheesman is in her second year as the Race Director.

The Feb. 10 Community Pot Luck will feature Josh Stroot of the Forest Service, who will speak about the local fires of last summer and precautions for the spring runoff. Dinners will be held at the 4-H Building at the Mineral County Fair Grounds at 6:00 pm. Coffee and lemonade will be provided along with the plates, napkins and utensils so we ask those who participate to bring an entrée, dessert or salad to share. For more information, call 822-3545. The final speaker will be on March 10.

Mineral County Relay for Life is holding their annual “Lunch in the Lot” fundraiser on Wednesday, June 8 next to the Trail West Bank in Superior from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Enjoy hamburgers, taco salad, nachoes, cookies, pies, lemonade and ice tea. St. Regis school board one of two recognized statewide

The St. Regis School Board was recognized as one of two School Boards of the Year in Montana for its efforts in policies, facilities, and programs at St. Regis. School Superintendent Joe Steele, who nominated the board for the award, said he has been impressed with the school board’s vision, and those past board members who initiated their vision.
