Glacier National Park officials on July 20 euthanized an aggressive and food-conditioned grizzly bear suspected of charging at a picnicking family near Swiftcurrent Lake Boat Launch earlier in the week.

The six mill levy
On Nov. 4 voters will make a FOR or AGAINST choice to reauthorize a six mill levy for the Montana University System (MUS). Its 2008 budget is $ 1,181,000,000. Montana’s total for the six mills is $ 11,840,000. That’s 1 percent of the MUS budget, 1 percent! Is raising a $1.2 billion enterprises’ revenue by 1 percent urgent? And, this figure does not include Grants, Endowments, Fund raising and other MUS net receipts. The U of M just raised $172,000,000 from alumni and private donors. A prodigious feat for one of the 14 (soon to be 15) MUS units.
Lady Tiger duo advance to divisionals
The Tigers only brought two athletes to the District 14-C meet, but walked away from Polson Thursday with a first and second-place finish and both girls earning the right to move on to the division meet.
Superior Ranger District to conduct prescribed burns
The Superior Ranger District is planning on conducting several prescribed burns across the county this spring. Potential burn units are located in Cedar Creek, Thompson Creek, Mill Creek, Patrick Creek and Rock Creek. The exact timing of the burns will be contingent upon weather, fuel conditions, soil moisture and other environmental factors.

Clark Fork Lady Mountain Cats continue march toward State
The Clark Fork Mountain Cats lost their first matchup at Divisionals in Hamilton, Feb. 22-24. They faced Arlee on Thursday and experienced their first loss of the season, 57-49. This moved Arlee to play Twin Bridges and pushed the Cats into a loser-out game against Lone Peak on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

I-90 closed for two hours due to elk collision
A small SUV hit an elk, causing a chain reaction on Interstate 90 on Thursday, May 24, that led to both lanes being closed for several hours. After hitting the elk, a pickup truck hauling a camper, rear-ended the SUV and then a semi-truck hit the camper and jack-knifed into the other lane, according to Frenchtown Fire Department representative, Mel Holtz. Though his department was not on the scene, he followed up with a report.

Arts Council brings creole music to Mineral County
The Mineral County Performing Arts Council presented Dennis Stroughmatt et L’Esprit Creole who performed French Creole music on Oct. 4 in Superior.

The birds of spring arrive at Freezeout Lake
Each spring and fall, flocks of white geese make their way to Freezeout Lake located near Fairfield, Montana. They are migrating from southern wintering grounds to nesting areas in the far north. As far as Wrangel Island, Russia. Last weekend, there were a reported 15,000 geese flying through the area, landing on any one of the six ponds and lake which cover the Freezeout Lake Wildlife Management Area. However, as many as 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans have been observed in the area at one time. They usually arrive around mid-March, and in late October of each year.

Science club explores southwest MT from hot pots to dinosaurs
The Superior Science Club took a trip at the end of April “that will not be forgotten any time soon” said their advisor Beau Servo. After a year of fundraising, seven students went to Yellowstone National Park, the Ringing Rocks outside Butte, Quake Lake, and the Museum of the Rockies.
