The Montana Legislature only meets in session for 90 work days every other year, so our next session will commence in January, 2015. In between those sessions is referred to as “the interim”, and some Representatives and Senators are given appointments during that time to sit on an interim committee.

Critical review of CSKT water compact released
On Thursday June 27, 2013, several Montana state legislators, and Concerned Citizens of Western Montana, released a critical review of the existing reserved water compact for the Flathead Reservation, and an alternative comparative compact to demonstrate what a reasonable and equitable compact should have looked like. Senator Verdell Jackson, Kalispell, Representative Jerry O’Neil, Columbia Falls, Representative Keith Regier, Kalispell, and several other legislators, including former legislators are involved in this initiative.
Elks celebrate Flag Day
THOMPSON FALLS- The Elks Lodge in Thompson Falls held their annual Flag Day celebrations on Saturday in commemoration of the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777.
U.S. Census increases pay for MT workers
Beginning Dec. 1, the U.S. Census Bureau will increase Census field workers’ pay rates across the country.
The 'rule of law' in Sanders County
In the light of the Primary Election, it is good to have learned, at the April 28th JBS Sheriff's forum, that neither of the remaining candidates will take on battles with the federal government. When the United States enacts a law that is repugnant to the US Constitution and the Montana Constitution, both candidates promised to not interfere. Rather, they will defer to the Montana Attorney General or to the Governor.

Broncs place third at divisionals
The Frenchtown Broncs weren’t able to grab another divisional title this year, but they managed to score 204 points, good enough for a third place finish.

Bobcats beat out by rain at meet
The Superior Bobcats went to Frenchtown this last weekend, competed in a couple events, before they all piled back onto the bus to drive back to Superior. The meet got cancelled due to a strike of winter weather.

Plains woman honored for conservation efforts
Blanche Richardson, a long time resident of the Plains area, was recognized at the annual Eastern Sanders Conservation District Dinner for her conservation accomplishments. Blanche has put three parcels of land under permanent conservation easements through the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) between 2001 and 2009. WRP is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service Field Office in Plains.
SCRCC holds biennial meeting in Plains
The Sanders County Republican Central Committee held it’s biennial meeting in Plains at the Grange on Saturday. The meeting, held once every two years, served as a means of updating local Republicans on party affairs, holding elections and promoting the GOP platform and ideas. Chaired by Katy French, the event began with the ceremonial Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer at which point the convention was called to order.
MCSO Deputy Balenger back on duty
Mineral County Deputy Jim Balenger has returned to active duty for MCSO following a paid administrative leave that began Oct. 3, 2012. During that time period, the Montana Department of Criminal Investigations conducted an investigation into unknown allegations regarding Deputy Balenger.

Superior wrestlers place at Ronan Duals
The wrestling school in this area that has the smallest number of wrestlers on its roster was the lone representative from Sanders and Mineral counties during this past weekend’s Western Montana Invitational, aka the Ronan Duals.
USPS scraps plan to move Missoula mail processing to Spokane
The United States Postal Service will not move mail processing work from Missoula to Spokane after exploring the option last year.

Death in Thompson Falls under investigation
On May 3 at approximately 1:55 p.m. the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a 911 call stating an adult male had been found unresponsive.
Local commissioner appointed to advisory council
SANDERS COUNTY – Sanders County Commissioner Carol Brooker was appointed to the Local Government Advisory Council in the Department of Revenue recently.

AG says state will consider funding for PL 280
Whether fueled by election-year largesse or Lake County’s impending withdrawal from Public Law 280, Attorney General Austin Knudsen delivered some long-awaited good news Monday. The office of Gov. Greg Gianforte, he said, “has authorized me to convey to you folks they would sign a bill through the Legislature that provided some law enforcement funding for Lake County.”

Thompson concludes a successful high school career at Plains Signs with BYU
Former Plains High School four-sport athlete Jessica Thompson admits she is used to staying busy and her rigorous schedule in high school should adequately prepare her for future endeavors at Brigham Young University.
