Baxter sisters headed to state golf tourney
The first state championship of the 2023 Montana high school sports season gets underway today (May 16-17) as a pair of Thompson Falls Lady Blue Hawks head to Shelby, joined by the Lady Hawks team in quest of a state title.

We completed our 35th legislative day on Saturday, February 12, 2011. The transmittal deadline for non-revenue bills to pass between the House and the Senate is Thursday, February 24th. Bills which have no revenues attached to them must be passed out of committee by Friday, February 18th so that they may heard on the floor of the House in order to be voted on by the House and complete the process in the lower chamber. Then the bills which pass 2nd and 3rd readings advance to the Senate for another thorough vetting. The bills which successfully complete the process in the Senate are then transmitted to the Governor’s office to be signed into law.

Trotters compete at state softball tournament in Belgrade
BELGRADE – The State B-C Softball Tournament kicked off last week with the Plains-Hot Springs Trotters joining the western contingent of the field at the year’s final competition.

Madison Hill of St. Regis earns top honors at State
Madison Hill, a junior at St. Regis, took top honors in the long jump at the Class C State Track and Field meet in Missoula on Friday with 16-8.25. She was trailed by Claire Fickler from Drummond with 16-06.75. Ember Schwindt from Cascade took third with 16.05.75, followed by Carly Hergett of Arlee in fourth with 16-05.25.
Federal regulators flag concerns as Montana cuts Medicaid rolls
Federal regulators are urging Montana health officials to fix shortcomings in the state’s Medicaid redetermination process, expressing “concerns” that the state may be disenrolling people who are eligible for the public health insurance and creating barriers for others through long wait times at call centers and during the application process.

Montana Capitol Christmas tree harvested from Lubrecht Forest
GREENOUGH – Governor Greg Gianforte today announced the harvest of the 2023 State Capitol Christmas tree from a Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) State Trust Lands plot in the Lubrecht Forest.
Mineral Co. girls earn All-State honors
Fourteen girls were announced for the 2016-17 Western C Girls All-State selection in basketball. Including Superior’s athlete, junior Kenzie Mueller received first team all-conference and first team all-state. St. Regis senior, Madison Hill also received all-state. Other St. Regis girls awarded was not available by press time.
Plains back on track
The Plains track team started practice last week and will look to improve on a great year last year especially at the state level.

Montana adds protections for kids in private residential treatment programs
As a teenager attending Chrysalis Therapeutic Boarding School for Girls, a private, alternative therapeutic program in Eureka, Montana, from 2001 to 2004, Meg Appelgate was subjected to emotional abuse and not given medical care for injuries from physical labor such as baling hay, chopping wood, and moving rocks, she said.

All year, Thompson Falls senior Cody Burk has been among the best throwers in Montana and Saturday at the Class B state championships in Laurel, he cemented that status with a state title in the shot put.
