Karen K. Pierce

Karen K. Pierce passed away peacefully at home after a six month battle with ovarian cancer on March 5, 2013. She was born February 12, 1950 in Kalispell, Montana to Alvin and Irene Cobeen. She was a devoted employee at JC Penney’s for 37 years before retiring last April. She enjoyed painting, family travel, going to see musicals and trying new things. But her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother to her three beautiful grandchildren! She leaves behind her son, Brett Pierce, daughter-in-law Emily Pierce, and granddaughter Neve’; and her daughter Aimy Jordan and grandsons Carl and Eric. She is also survived by her sister Shonda and family in Lonepine, Montana; and brother Reece in Plains, Montana. There will be a celebration of her life at Hennessey-Smith, 2203 N. Division, Spokane, WA at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9th, 2013.

At Superior Meats, an entire pig sits prepped and ready on a stainless steel table in the back room. Waiting to be roasted and become the celebrated main course at an upcoming wedding reception. Next to the table, employee Russell Anderson throws hams into a tumbler. The hams had just been infused with brine in a machine where they are taken by a conveyor belt to an infusion device. A device which has several long prongs that pierce the meat and fills it with brine.

A shock to the system brings in the New Year for many locals

With the sun shining and temperatures hovering around 15 degrees, people from all over the area convened in Thompson Falls to bring in the New Year with a dip in the Clark Fork River. Over 40 people made the plunge, and several more congregated on the snowy banks at Goose Landing to watch.

Candidates file for 2018 election races

At 5 p.m. on Monday, March 12, last minute candidates filed for this year’s elections. In Montana, voters will be wading through 292 legislative candidates running for 100 seats in the House and 25 in the Senate. Of those open seats, 20 are already decided because only one candidate filed, 11 of which are Democrat and nine Republican. Overall, 139 Democrats have filed and 142 Republicans, 20 Libertarians, four Independent, and four Green Party.
