Forest Service begins prescribed burns in Mineral County

MINERAL COUNTY – Forest Service personnel were busy last week taking advantage of weather conditions that allowed them to perform a prescribed burn near St. Regis as part of an ongoing effort to reduce fuel loads on forested land in Mineral County.

TROUT CREEK – Wood chips flew through the air as saws cut through lumber and shots rang out as competitors tested their accuracy at the shooting range at the Pentathlon in Trout Creek during the annual Huckleberry Festival last weekend.

Museum opens fire display

A hundred years ago, on August 20 and 21, one of the largest forest fires burned across three million acres, taking the lives of 86 individuals. Dry conditions and high winds helped to accelerate the fire, which has become known widely as The Big Burn or Big Blowup, which burned through northern Idaho and western Montana, including Mineral County.

Military flags raised at Plains cemetery

There are six new flags flying high at the Plains cemetery. The last two years, five of the the flags were being purchased by the Plains VFW Post 3596. At 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, the Plains cemetery sexton Ken Jones raised the American flag, an MIA flag and five military flags; Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard. Four employees of the Gambles store in Plains made this possible through their generosity and in memory of family members who have served in the United States military. Denise Newman, John Lemro, Brittany Cook, and Margaret McNeil bought the flags that are now flying at the Plains cemetery. They contacted Joe Eisenbrandt, who knows where the American made flags can be purchased and ordered them. A local family has decided to buy the American flag for the cemetery for the next several generations of the family. This is the first time that there has been a MIA flag flying at the cemetery. McNeil spoke about the purchase of the six flags by herself and the other employees.

Lady Hawks fly to win

THOMPSON FALLS – The Lady Hawks barely edged out the competition in their game against Libby in a close match up that landed the ladies in overtime. The competition heated up and Thompson Falls was able to take the win from right under their opponents nose. The final score landed at 42-41.
