NOTICE OF SALE Department of Natural Resources & Conservation Timber Sale The Tornilla Creek Timber Sale is located within Section 26, T26N-R27W, on the State's Plains Unit. Approximately 17,360 tons, consisting of mixed conifer sawlogs, are offered for sale. Sealed bids will be opened at the Department of Natural Resources & Conservation, 2705 Spurgin Road, Missoula, Montana on January 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Bids may be hand delivered or mailed and will be accepted any time prior to the bid opening. DNRC recommends that bidders contact the Trust Land Management Division (406-542-4300) prior to the bid opening to ensure that your bid has been received. Bids must be accompanied by a deposit of $15,884.00, representing 5% of the minimum bid value of the sale in cashier's check, certified check, bank money order or bank draft to be applied to the first sale invoice for the successful bidder. Bid bonds will be accepted and, for the successful bidder, will be closed upon execution of the Timber Sale Contract and Timber Sale Bond. The sale will be awarded to the highest responsible bidder. If the successful bidder is unable to execute the contract within 30 calendar days from the date the sale is awarded, the bid deposit will be retained by the Department as liquidated damages. The right is reserved to reject any or all bids. The Alberton branch of the Mineral County Library is holding a fundraiser on Jan. 27 called “The Armchair Traveler Wine Tasting.” It’s from 4-7 p.m. at the Alberton Community Center. Tickets are currently available. The event will include a wine and cheese/chocolate pairing, with wine provided by Hidden Legends Winery, Ten Spoons Winery and Missoula Winery.

The year 2017 was ushered in on the back of an epic snow storm which dump nearly a foot of snow on the valley in early January. It was just one of many natural disasters and phenomenon which dominated headlines throughout the year.

Bob Kinney Wrestling Classic held in Superior

Thompson Falls won the Bob Kinney Wrestling Classic held over last Saturday, Dec. 9 with a team score of 184.5. Teams from all over the western Montana traveled to Superior to participate at the annual tournament. Though the number of teams remained about the same, Superior’s head wrestling coach, Charlie Crabb said the number of wrestlers had increased.

The St. Regis Lady Tigers squared off against the Lady Vikings in Charlo on Friday, Dec. 8 with a win, 38 to 27. The Vikings held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter with 10 to 11. But in the second quarter the Tigers turned up the heat and added 14 more points to the board making it 24 to 18 at the half.

With more years than they can remember, Ilene Wolff and Kathy Koepke said the St. Regis Community Council has been putting on the Annual Holiday Bazaar. This year they had more tables than in the past with 38 which is 10 more than last year said Wolff.

Wrestling began last weekend with the Owen Invitational in Polson where 18 regional teams competed in the two day tournament. There are 13 wrestlers out this year for the Clark Fork Mountain Cats, mostly sophomores and freshmen.

Flat Creek Superfund site closed for winter

Work on the Flat Creek-Iron Mountain Mine Superfund site has ended for the year as winter weather moved into the area. Some of the work on the nearly $4 million site which is located north of Superior, has been completed while other projects will need to wait until next spring according to a report by the Superior Technical Assistance Committee (STAC) Environmental Consultant, Steve Ackerlund.

With 15 players rounding out the Clark Fork Mountain Cats 13C roster the team has some power house players and some strong freshman up-comers. There are three seniors this year: Drake Neill, Connor Voll, and Evan Hall. Neill is the lone returning senior and he was voted team captain.
