May is a busy month for local schools as end-of-the-year activities fill the calendar. Mrs. Crabb’s Superior School fourth grade class spent Thursday, May 25, learning about pond ecology, and how to cast a fishing pole. They also went on a nature walk around Savenac and toured Tricon Timber.

Superior Fire Department 'heats up' during training in winter

The Superior Volunteer Fire Department had the opportunity to do some live fire-fighting exercises on Sunday, Dec. 2. Volunteers met at Sloway Frontage Road where Isaiah McGuffey donated an abandoned building to the department. It was a 5,000-square foot raw wood building that was intended to be a house, but was never completed, said Fire Chief Steve Temple.

SUPERIOR – The Superior School District hosted an open house event on Tuesday, Aug. 26, in order to provide parents and students with important information prior to the start of classes on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Superior Ranger District prescribed burning Spring 2013

The Superior Ranger District has numerous prescribed burns planned for the spring of 2013. The burn units range in size from single harvest units to large wildlife burns. Some, but not all, of the scheduled burns will be implemented this year. The exact timing and execution of individual burns is dependent on factors such as weather, fuel moisture, staffing, airshed restrictions, and budget.

Meeting scheduled to discuss Superfund work

A public meeting is scheduled for today, Wednesday, May 12, which intends to discuss the Flat Creek Iron Mountain Mine and Superfund Site. The Mineral County Health Department (MCHD) has invited the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSRD) to host the meeting for Superior residents.

MINERAL COUNTY – A traffic accident Sunday evening near Superior resulted in one fatality after a tractor-trailer ran off Interstate 90 westbound and crashed into a housing development.

Ed passed away after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer. Ed went peacefully to be with the Lord on March 22, 2014 in the presence of his loving wife Eleanor, five children, and numerous grandchildren and close family members. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard, sister Mary Lou, infant son Brian Keith, infant daughter Lynn Marie and grandson Parker Joseph.
