The Plains softball team opened the season against a pair of non-conference foes. While the Trotters did hit the ball consistently, they were unable to prevent opposing runs from being scored.

The other sign of winter: Flu hitting hard this year

The flu has hit hard this year with 3,318 cases and 369 hospitalizations reported so far across Montana. Six deaths have also been reported, with adults over age of 65 hit the hardest. In February, flu season is still going strong, with 781 cases reported last week, according to the Montana Department of Health and Human Services.

Truck driver killed

A semi-truck driver was killed March 6 near Superior after his vehicle jack-knifed near mile marker 53. The 65-year-old man from Reseda, California had lost control of his truck while traveling east on Interstate 90. He hit a concrete barrier and his truck ended up across both eastbound lanes. He was inspecting the damage when a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling east hit the left side of the semi and then struck the driver. The Tahoe driver was a 66-year-old man from Alberton. Both men were taken to Mineral Community Hospital. The truck driver died from injuries sustained in the accident. The Alberton man did not receive any injuries. The identities of the two men were not released.

I-90 closed for two hours due to elk collision

A small SUV hit an elk, causing a chain reaction on Interstate 90 on Thursday, May 24, that led to both lanes being closed for several hours. After hitting the elk, a pickup truck hauling a camper, rear-ended the SUV and then a semi-truck hit the camper and jack-knifed into the other lane, according to Frenchtown Fire Department representative, Mel Holtz. Though his department was not on the scene, he followed up with a report.

Jeanine Cook captured some winter ice art in Sanders County as an arctic blast delivered subzero temperatures to the area last weekend. Plains dipped to minus 27 and Dixon hit minus 30 on Jan. 13, according to National Weather Service data.
