On May 12th, the Superior Elementary Student Council traveled to Plains for two nursery tours conducted by Mendy Estill of Lawyer Nursery and Della Garrison of Lynch Creek Nursery.
Lions Club looking for rodeo junior princess
The Superior Lions Club is currently looking for a junior princess in addition to a princess and queen to reign over their very popular rodeo scheduled for Friday, August 6th and Saturday, August 7th.
Superior set to hold Memorial Day ceremony
Memorial Day ceremonies are set for Monday, May 31 at 11 a.m. in Superior. Members of the Lloyd Riding Post 6238 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and any other veterans who want to take part, will fall in at 10:45 a.m. at the Masonic Temple on River Street.

Sheriffs talk levy, budget at forum
Whichever candidate is voted into the position of sheriff this fall, he will have his hands full trying to run the department, while navigating a budget that seems to be full of shortfalls. This year, the sheriff's budget saw a deficit of $149,000, which in years past has been made up using other county funds that are no longer available.
Alberton sends one to state
Twelve Alberton Panthers competed at divisional track over the past weekend, but only one ended up performing well enough in order to stamp a ticket to state. Jake Thompson will represent the Alberton Panthers at the state track meet this weekend in an event that Coach Rachel Clevenger said they weren't expecting. Thompson, who is a sophomore, took fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 39-7.
JP candidates speak at forum
After no years of interest in the position of Justice of the Peace for several years, four candidates' names will fill the ballot in the primaries on June 8. At a forum on Wednesday, the four contenders had their chance to make their case for why they should be elected into the position.

Balenger sentenced for illegal elk possession
On Wednesday, May 19, Mineral County James Balenger appeared in court to receive sentencing for the charge of illegal possession of an elk. According to Bev Smith, Missoula County Justice Court Clerk, Balenger was ordered to pay a fine of $535.00 and has lost his hunting, fishing and trapping privileges for twelve months. Balenger was also ordered to forfeit the elk mount and to turn it over to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Spencer moves to state track meet

Golfers struggle at state
The St. Regis golfers gave it their all on May 18 and 19. The Tigers spent two days playing at Madison Meadows Golf Course in Ennis at the state golf tournament. With no teams, either in boys or girls, it was a competition among individuals.

When Judy and I came to settle in the Plains area, we had the checklist of important places to locate and become familiar with. Upon finding the library, we relaxed and agreed: Plains, now this is an all-inclusive town.
Superior girls take second at Divisionals, headed to state
It was a close day of competition on Friday for the Superior girls. After completing seven events, the Bobcats were only behind Bigfork by a mere point. The Bobcats finished Friday in second place with 33 points, while Bigfork sat in first place with 34 points. Yet, on Saturday, Bigfork netted several victories and pulled away from the Bobcats and ended up winning the divisional tournament. The Superior girls finished in second place, however, with 68 points, a mere four points ahead of Darby, but 45 points away from first-place Bigfork.

Thirty-six students graduated on Sunday from Superior High School. High school principal Allan Labbe welcomed guests as they gathered to celebrate the students "educational achievement." And while the academic success was the prominent focus of the afternoon's commencement ceremony, there was some question and debate about how many times the 2010 class had beater the faculty in tug-of-war contests throughout the years.

Championship comeback
For the first time ever softball teams in the west had a chance to prove their worth on the field before heading to state and it was Thompson Falls who came out on top bouncing back from a rough start to defeat Loyola 7-3 to be crowned Western B-C champs.

Superior girls take district title
The Superior girls won their first district title this last weekend at district competition in class 6-B at the Missoula County Stadium. Deer Lodge came in second with 100 points even, but the Superior girls were several strides ahead with 131 points to sweep the competition on Friday and Saturday. After seven events on Friday, the Superior girls led with 56 points to Deer Lodge's second place total of 49.

Four Tiger golfers from St. Regis headed up to the state tournament this week. Thomas Spencer, Zane Worrall, Shelby Berg and Jocelyn Dockter played at Ennis yesterday, Tuesday, May 18 and are playing today Wednesday, May 19.
Alberton sends twelve to divisionals
Coach Rachel Clevenger's track team has had about half their meets cancelled this season, but that didn't pose any setbacks for the team. Clevenger said she had twelve individuals qualify for divisionals this last weekend at districts, which is over half the team.
ATSDR to perform health screenings to check lead/arsenic levels in children
This summer, July 13-July 15, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will be conducting lead screenings in an effort to fill in missing information from the public health assessment that was completed back in January in relation to the lead and arsenic contamination in the soils as Superior was listed as a superfund site.

The seven Superior Business Professional of America students weren't sure if they were going to get enough money to go to the BPA National Conference, but from May 6 through May 13, the students were in Anaheim, California, thanks to the support of the community.
Officials discuss summer work in Superior
Superior residents had a lot of questions for officials on Wednesday night at a meeting concerning the soil samples that the Environmental Protection Agency had done last summer and work that is being planned for this summer. Superior mayor Mike Wood opened the meeting by thanking everyone for coming out noting that there was a lot of work to be done this summer.

Plum Creek annually awards scholarships to exemplary high school seniors who plan to continue their education after graduation. Local students win 2010 Blackfoot Telephone scholarship
May 14, 2010 Missoula, Montana - The Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative (Blackfoot) Board of Trustees today announced the winners of the 2010 Blackfoot Scholarship Fund totaling $16,000. Established in 1996, the scholarship fund was created to support and encourage post-secondary education for member-owners residing in Blackfoot's service territories. The fund awards $500 individual scholarships to outstanding high school students continuing their education in the fall of 2010.

Tennis girls finish regular season strong
The Superior tennis girls finished out the play of their regular season this last week. They played Fort Benton at home on Friday and then traveled to the Best of the West Tournament on Saturday in Missoula.
Superior golfers finish season with divisional play
The Superior Bobcats finished their golf season on Monday in Missoula. They returned from divisional play on Monday at around 5:50 p.m. with clubs in tow. They had been looking to secure a spot to the state tournament that is scheduled for May 18-19 in Huntley. But the day didn't go quite as expected however.
Regis golfers ready for state
St. Regis hosted golf teams from around the area on Thursday at Trestle Creek. Although there weren't enough numbers playing for a girls' team, the boys were on the board with 508 for the day. On the girls' side, however, Jocelyn Dockter and Shelby Berg were once again up in the top ten for individual scores. Dockter took fifth with a score of 112 and Berg took tenth with 129.
Superior records smashed
Christofer Eriksson shattered the school record last Thursday for the pole vault at the Superior Invitational. The record, which stood at 12-6, was back from 1986. To shatter a record, one must jump at least two additional inches. The feat was no problem for Ericksson who did so to a cheering applause from the crowd. It was also no surprise that he took first in the event with a jump of 12-8.
Alberton feels ready for districts
After having most of their meets cancelled due to weather issues, the students on the Alberton track team were a bit nervous to be out competing again at Seeley this past weekend. Coach Rachel Clevenger said that they weren't sure how things were going to go and if they would be able to better their times or not. But despite their worries, everything turned out all right.
School board election results
It might not be November 2, but last Tuesday, Alberton, Superior and St. Regis School Districts held elections for school board trustee positions. Candidates were either elected to a two or three year term. St. Regis also voted on a Building Reserve Levy.

Shopping for a good cause
The Superior 4-H building was transformed into a cute little boutique over the weekend. Shoppers, mostly women, although the occasional husband wandered in, were able to peruse gently used clothing, jewelry and accessories at the Booby Boutique. Complete with mirrors and strung lights, the inside of the 4-H building was set for shoppers.
Meeting scheduled to discuss Superfund work
A public meeting is scheduled for today, Wednesday, May 12, which intends to discuss the Flat Creek Iron Mountain Mine and Superfund Site. The Mineral County Health Department (MCHD) has invited the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSRD) to host the meeting for Superior residents.

Montana Aquatic Invasive Species Act

It was a busy last week for the Plains golf team. The team played three meets in five days, which ended with the divisional meet in Missoula where the team placed eighth, missing out on the state meet next week.

With two days before the District Track meet in Bigfork senior Trent Thompson is throwing the best he has all season. After making news last week for breaking Plain's shot put record the senior went to the most competitive meet of the season, Archie Roe in Kalispell, and came away with two first place finishes in the shot put and discus and grabbed a personal record in the javelin.
Hot Springs ready for district meet
Hot Springs' seniors Randi Arnold and Devon White are forming quite a duo in the triple jump. After Arnold placed first at the Sanders County Meet in Noxon on Thursday with a jump of 33-10, adding at least three feet to her previous best jump, White turned around and placed first in the same event with a jump of 32-8 on Saturday at the Seeley Swan Invitational in Missoula.

The Thompson Falls senior boys excelled on the track on Sunday and it was the freshmen girls who excelled on Thursday at the County Meet.

St. Regis teacher recipient of the Horace Mann Abraham Lincoln Fellowship
Fifth grade students in Diane Gingerich's class were captivated on Friday as they listened to her talk about the colonists and their protest against King George's taxes. Hands were quickly going up as Gingerich answered student's questions, and took their comments, as they studied two different types of pictures, each presenting a different take on one event.
Hinkle talks on diseases wolves carry
If you want to strike up a hot topic issue in Mineral County just drop the wolves into any conversation. Most residents weren't happy with the reintroduction when it occurred and now it seems they have even more issues for concern, issues that trace back to the wolf.
Congressman Rehberg speaks in Superior
The Mineral County Republicans held their annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner on Saturday. The county party serves as a platform to raise money for the county party and to introduce the republican candidates that are seeking local offices this election year. Congressman Denny Rehberg served as the keynote speaker for night's festivities. The event took place at the Rock-n-Rodeo in Superior.
An Outdoor Classroom
The fourth graders at St. Regis elementary returned from a three-day long vacation last Thursday. Well, it wasn't a vacation, per say, but a vacation from the classroom. The thirteen fourth graders were up at Glacier National Park from Monday, April 26-Wednesday, April 28 for a three-day long field trip. Teacher Monica Wilson said the trip is science-based and it's one they've taken for five years now.
St. Regis golfers set sights on home meet, state
St. Regis golfers got the weekend off compliments of Mother Nature. A cold and rainy Saturday ended up calling for the cancellation of the meet that was supposed to take place at Deer Lodge. Aside from the cancellation, Coach Dan Park said that the season has been going okay for the Tiger golfers.

Superior tennis loses first match to Townsend at Townsend Duals
Rainy weather brought a cancellation into the Superior tennis girls' schedule last week. They were supposed to play Valley Christian at home on Thursday, but the weather had other plans. On Friday, the girls were at Darby and beat the team 6-1. On Saturday, however, the girls incurred their first loss of the season at the Townsend Duals. The team lost 6-0 to Townsend. They tied 3-3 against Whitehall and Fairfield at the duals, but played strong against Choteau and won 6-2.
Superior track lose three meets to weather
Typically in track, you're trying to outrun your opponents. But at Monday's practice on May 3, the Superior Bobcats were trying to outrun the dark clouds in the sky that were drifting their way. Coach Tori Lucier said that while the rainy weather hasn't been frustrating all season, she said it certainly has been a nuisance as of late.

If the weather doesn't start improving, Seth Kuhl said that he and the students might be dawning raincoats to go outside and practice as divisionals are coming up on Monday, May 10 in Missoula. They lost two tournaments over the week because of weather. They were supposed to play at Deer Lodge last Saturday, but that didn't happen. They were also supposed to play at Seeley on Tuesday, May 4, but on Monday, Kuhl had already gotten a phone call from the course letting him know that the greens were in no conditions to be played on.

Hot Springs duos place high
It was a duo that shined for Hot Springs last week in its two track meets, although the duo changed slightly between the first and last track meet. Starting on Tuesday, seniors Reiley Winebrenner and Devon White were both invited to the Russ Pilcher Western Montana TOP 10 track meet and both placed in the meet featuring only the best of the best with no class differential.
Trotters have short week
It was a short week for the Plains softball as they played only one game last week. In that game it was one short inning that kept them from upsetting the St. Ignatius Bulldogs playing at home.
