MDT proposes rehabilitation of bridge near Trout Creek on Hwy 200

TROUT CREEK - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to rehabilitate the bridge over the Clark Fork River on Highway 200 located approximately one mile northwest of Trout Creek in Sanders County. The project begins at the intersection of Highway 200 and Blue Slide Road, reference post 27.9 and extends east for approximately 0.5 miles ending near reference post 28.4.

After retiring earlier this year, he and his wife, Sandy, his love, and best friend of eleven years, moved to Plains, MT to be closer to his brother and sister-in-law, Marlin & Virginia Cooper. Mike will be missed by his children Keith & wife, Theresa, Terra and husband Brent Smith, and Sandy’s children: Tommy, Renee & Tabatha, all of whom he accepted and loved as his own. He adored his five grandchildren: Brent Jr., Shelby, Trenton, Miles and Trinity. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marlin and Beulah Cooper.

THOMPSON FALLS - On September 10 FWP Wardens responded to and investigated a report of a wounded black bear that injured a man near Thompson Falls. According to the reporting party an archery hunter was hunting elk in a drainage located off Prospect Creek when the hunter observed a black bear. The hunter was also licensed to hunt black bear and took a shot at the bear with his bow.

TROUT CREEK - Clouds and threats of rain could not stop the 9th annual Cool Summer Nights Car Show in Trout Creek at the Lakeside Motel and Resort. Overcast skies looked to washout the car show, however by the start of the show at 10 a.m. the number of cars outdid the rainy expectation. Cars, trucks, pickups and motorcycles lined up on the grass, pavement and inside of the restaurant. In all, 36 vehicles lined up for the day with sunny to overcast skies. The voting for the people’s and driver’s choice awards were completed by spectators as well as the drivers. A deadline of 2 p.m. was established for votes, which allowed one hour to tally up the numbers and announce the winners by 3 p.m.

PLAINS - The 2013 Sanders County Fair descended upon Plains on Monday, bringing with it all the ceremony, showmanship, display and carnival atmosphere residents have come to expect from the annual celebration. Thousands were in attendance for the event that began earlier in the week and ended Sunday with the traditional demolition derby finale.

This person is a person of interest in the theft of a credit card from the Assembly of God Church. The credit card was used at the Town Pump and at McGowans Grocery on August 30, 2013 between 3:30 and 3:50 p.m.. The Plains Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying this subject as well as information on the White Ford Expedition pictured.

Montana Congressman Steve Daines was on hand to present the Prisoner of War Medal posthumously to the daughter of former prisoner and Montana resident Laddie Olson.

The 2013 Sanders County fair started, at least for me, on Thursday. We were all in the Valley Press office having our weekly staff meeting, and I was trolling Justyna and Colin about fair week. They get to run around the fairgrounds taking photos all week long, and they get paid for it. Pretty light duty, in my opinion.

Deputy Balenger incident files released

After a nine-month paid leave that began on Oct. 3, during which $44,849.54 in public funds were used to pay for the salary of Mineral County Deputy Jim Balenger as well as insurance, taxes and other costs and Montana Department of Criminal Investigations Agent Kevin McCarvel conducted an investigation at the request of County Attorney Marcia Boris, Dept. Balenger returned to active duty.
